THANK YOU to Trico Foundation for your support to Calgary Reads. I am so proud of Steacy Collyer, Blythe Butler, Jill Andres and Trico for their wisdom and willingness to share their learning with others. As a Board member, I am encouraged to know that we are willing to take some risk and learn as we go, even if we decide not to pursue an opportunity at this time; actually I believe this is in fact the BEST learning for all of us in the sector! Proud to be a part of such a great organization!

Good information to have! I really respect the companies that revamp their business to be more green. I've also noticed a lot of courier companies trying to make the shift. Do you think others will follow A-Way Express's example?

Thanks for your comment, Tammy. The tortoise/hare analogy certainly resonates with me as well. Progress is a wonderful thing, but if we move so quickly through it – will we get to the other side and recall why we started at all? Especially with this conversation, I think we’ll start seeing what ‘blended’ means at individual, organizational, and systems levels.

Love your writing Michelle. Reading this is a welcome reminder that the tortoise approach I’ve chosen for my own social entrepreneurship journey is the right one … even though the hare inside of me is constantly screaming for tangible outcomes/results/profits. But if the legacy my efforts contributed to is an evolution “beyond the bifurcation* that was created before we were around” this would most definitely be enough for me.

The question I’m left asking myself is, “Can the collaboration between the sectors I crave be achieved as an entrepreneur or am I perhaps a philanthropist in social entrepreneur’s clothing?”

It would be great if there was interest to start a Free Geek. I found some web forums from 2006 that showed interest in the concept, but don’t think much came of it. It’s a great model and really quite interesting.

I would be very interested in starting a Free Geek in Calgary, but it sounds like a pretty daunting task getting the capital needed for storage. I volunteered for a few shifts in Vancouver when I was still living there and was extremely impressed by the operation.

I think I need to get some community leaders together to get the ball rolling first…
