There are a growing number of events connected to social entrepreneurship. Many of them happen in our home city, demonstrating what an incredible hub of activity Calgary is. The Trico Foundation team is pleased to attend many of them and wish we could attend more.
On September 27th, 2018, from 11:00 am-1:00 pm, the Trico Changemakers Studio will host the official grand opening showcase where you can meet some of their studio members and learn how they are making a meaningful difference. Not only is The Trico Changemakers Studio a co-working space for inspiring changemakers, it is also a place for research projects, furthering Indigenous and non-Indigenous reconciliation, advancing the Ashoka U Changemaker Campus designation, paid internships, student membership, community membership, and more.
When one hears “entrepreneur”, I’m sure the descriptions of trailblazer, problem-solver, innovator or risk-taker pop into the listener’s head. It becomes a description for someone who is brave and ready slay the dragon but also prepared to be imprisoned by the belly of the beast and make their way out to try again. It means never giving up, fail forward, solve the problem, and make a difference—create real change.
With these admirable traits, who wouldn’t want to be considered an entrepreneur?
Trico Charitable Foundation is excited to announce the partnership and sponsorship with SVI Alberta, working alongside Momentum (Thrive), Social Enterprise Fund (SEF), and in cooperation with the Social Venture Institute Hollyhock (SVI). Trico is committed to the development of the social entrepreneurship ecosystem and believe this event will advance that ecosystem.
Well, here we are again at the close of another summer. I always feel like these months slip right through my hands – which is probably why I’m writing this blog about time management. Over the past few months, I’ve found myself learning my way into innovation and entrepreneurship in a way that is sufficiently self-directed.
As part of the completion of my minor in Indigenous Studies at Mount Royal University, I had the opportunity to study on the island of Hawai’i for three weeks with over 20 other students. We were there to study aloha àina and activism – as it pertains to the Kanaka Maoli communities. In the same vein, I was also there to start building relationships for my business. I had just started my time as a Trico Foundation summer student, and felt that this opportunity would be a great way to delve into some of the specifics around my venture, Sarjesa Inc., and its future growth.
After growing their impact to over 17,000+ people in 19 countries over the last few years, The SunSaluter team has now open sourced their design so they can bring the benefits of increased solar and clean water to millions more worldwide.
Not only is Map the System another reason to be proud to be from Canada, it’s a vital step forward in training changemakers to fully understand issues before trying to solve them.

On May 24th, 2018 the Trico Changemakers Studio hosted a reception where partners and community members alike were able to see the brand new and gorgeously-designed Studio. One of the most prominent features was the debut of the Fish Wheel.
